Brookman Primary School has been crowned the State’s best at this year’s WA Education Awards.
Meanwhile, a “caring ethos, respect for diverse cultures, an eye on the environment and highly skilled staff” has helped Lynwood Senior High School over the line to be named the top secondary school for 2018.
Carine Senior High School scooped two awards, one for principal Damian Shuttleworth and another for science teacher Daniel Hugo, named WA secondary principal of the year and WA Premier’s secondary teacher of the year respectively.
The primary principal of the year award went to Rebecca Bope who has headed Kalgoorlie Primary School for the past five years.
“My nanna was a teacher and I always enjoyed looking after my younger cousins growing up,” she said in a written statement.
“I also had success at school and was raised to appreciate the value and importance of education. I want that for all children.”
Focusing on a mantra that “kids are more than marks on a page”, Anthony Horn from West Beechboro Primary School was named the WA Premier’s primary teacher of the year.
Education minister Sue Ellery told educators at the awards breakfast that it was important to celebrate the work they did every day and their impact on the ‘hearts and minds” of students.
She said teachers had to juggle a huge diversity of issues in the classroom, such as increasing mental health issues, as well as community expectations.
“Great teachers and great school staff can really change lives,” she said.
Premier Mark McGowan said he had vivid memories of the teachers who shaped his life at public schools in regional communities.
“I often think back to some of those teachers and how much they strived with us, and particularly with me as a kid who was very keen to learn and to do well.”
